It’s mostly a coincidence, but watching Scarlett Johansson in this trailer just after this satirical item in McSweeneys was published feels unfortunate. We’ve seen him as master manipulator and the man with the plan, but could Age of Ultron mark him out as the biggest believer in the Avengers of them all? That’s not entirely true - they also have superpowered gadgets, Cap has superstrength thanks to his Super Soldier formula, and Thor is an alien who can fly and control the weather, after all - but it hints at a new role for Nick Fury. Jackson’s former head of SHIELD says midway through the trailer. “Here we all are - with nothing but our wit and will to save the world,” Samuel L. … but, really, what is Tony Stark doing with Loki’s scepter from the first Avengers movie at the 1:15 mark? To date, the Marvel movie heroes have always been reactive, dealing with threats as they emerged - could that be about to change in future? (Of course, the proactive alternative so far has looked like SHIELD as we saw them in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so maybe not.)
